How to Seal Galvalume Metal Roofing

The roof is one of the most important areas of the property, and it’s something you have to ensure you look after as much as possible. Now, there are a lot of things that play a part in this, and it is really important to ensure that you do your best to help make the roof as secure as possible, which means you need to think about the best way to waterproof it.

Galvalume coatings were introduced to the roofing industry in the 1970s, and have become a key part of waterproofing processes ever since. It combines steel, aluminum and zinc, and provides the best characteristics of all three metals. If sealed properly, galvalume roofs can prove to offer a highly effective form of waterproofing. So, here are some of the best ways of being able to seal galvalume metal roofing.

Clear the Roof

The first part of the process when it comes to sealing your galvalume metal roof is to make sure it is properly prepared. Now this can be done by clearing debris and dirt from the roof with a broom or brush in order to ensure it is in the right kind of condition to start the process. Preparing the roof for sealing involves making the ideal conditions, and this is why you need to make sure it is as clean and clear as possible.

Lay Butyl Tape

The next step is to lay 6-inch wide butyl tape over all the horizontally lapping end seams. Remove the release backing at a 45-degree angle, pressing the tape down onto the seam as you pull. Then use a small seam roller to ensure you roll out any wrinkles or bubbles. Repeat the process with 3-inch wide butyl tape over the vertical metal panel seams. But make sure you don’t overlap the previously taped horizontal seams, and remember not to stretch the tape as you apply it.

Apply Caulk

The next step in the process is to make sure you apply a liberal amount of waterproof caul to your galvalume metal roofing, to act as a sealant. Do this to both edges of the 6-inch wide horizontal end lap seam, and use a caulking gun to make it easier. Allow it to dry completely before moving onto the next part of the process.

Topcoat Sealant

There are a lot of things that you need to keep in mind when it comes to improving your galvalume metal roofing sealing process, and the final essential component here is to add a topcoat sealant once everything is dried. This will help to extend the longevity of your galvalume metal roof and reduce maintenance and upkeep costs in the future.

Being able to seal your galvalume metal roofing is so important for helping to improve and achieve long life and a water resistant roof. This is crucial for protecting the home against adverse weather conditions, as well as reducing the risk of expensive repair and maintenance work in the future as well. Make sure you follow this process to ensure your galvalume metal roofing is well looked after this year.
